A Few Quick Updates
Posted: 9 August 2011
No, I'm not dead. Neither is this weblog. We just took a nap. A very long nap. Anyway, what's up, world? I'm doing fine, and I hope you are too.I know it's been a long while. And I'm not going to make excuses. No sir. The truth is that I've been too busy with work to even think about writing here. There, I said it! So here are a few quick updates about the past few months...
Inside the office (and out)
Well, my last post was in March; so let's start there. At the office, work has been very hectic, but fun none the less. I've worked on projects from Microsoft, the Landmark Group and a few other notable clients. I've learnt more in the last 4-something months than I ever dreamt I would. I've dabbled in UI design, front-end development, cross-browser bug-fixing, client conference-calls, presentations: you name it...
On a personal front, I managed to read Hardboiled Web Design, The Elements of Typographic Style and Thinking With Type back to front. Recommended reading - the last two - for anyone aspiring to work wonders with letters. HWD, of course, is your foundation course for the "hardboiled" design philosophy and designing / coding kick-*ss websites in HTML5/CSS3.
After an eternity, I got drafted to Dribbble, by Amrinder Sandhu himself. There isn't much I can share at the moment, but you're welcome to follow me if you please.
And this site?
I know I was supposed to roll out a much-needed upgrade to this website but a couple of things are stopping me. Number one: laziness. Laziness to develop on some terrific ideas I have been harboring within for this site. I'm solely to blame here.
Secondly, typography: let me explain. I'm a bit of a type nerd now. I've been debating over which typeface to use as body text for many months now. You see, it has to be very old-style, dating back to the Renaissance: something like a Centaur or a Garamond or a Minion. The candidates I had in mind were Adobe Jenson and Minion. Until Hoefler & Frere-Jones announced that they'd be launching their own webfont service soon. This means the gorgeous Requiem also becomes an option. But that was months ago, and there's still no word from them. I would have gone ahead with a Typekit subscription long ago, but the prospect of affordable H&FJ webfonts is too tempting. I'm gonna wait. Meanwhile, take a look at this shot that got some love over at Dribbble.
So what now?
I had vowed not to write another post on this weblog back in March; but it seems the new design isn't coming together anytime soon. Sigh! I feel trapped. The Lord knows how many designers are looking at this site and nodding their heads. Or how many developers are checking the crap this site has for source code. Sorry guys, I'm much better than this.
Sometimes I feel the best thing to do would be to just go ahead and launch something very bare-bones. Responsiveness and other eye-candy can come later. I just want to put something out here. Who knows, I just might.
I can't say for sure when I will feel like writing again. Until then.
